Oklahoma County deputies about to start serving eviction notices by law amid pandemic

KOCO’S PORSHA RILEY IT’S NOT
SOMETHING THEY WANT TO DO, BUT
HAVE TO BY LAW. PORSHA: YES, THEY TELL ME
THEY’VE GOTTEN A LOT OF BACKLASH
BECAUSE OF THE BECAUSE OF THIS
ON SOCIAL MEDIA, BUT SAY ONCE
THEY’RE ORDERED TO STEP IN, IT’S
OUT OF THEIR CONTROL, AND STRESS THERE’S HELP OUT THERE YOU CAN
TURN TO BEFORE THE PROCESS
REACHES THEM.>>THERE’S A THREE STEP PROCESS
TO EVICT SOMEONE
FIRST IS WHEN THE LANDLORD SAYS,
SO THIS PERSON HASN’T BEEN
PAYING, I WANT TO EVICT THIS
RENTER. IT GENERALLY TAKES FROM THAT
POINT UNTIL THE TIME WE SERVE
NOTICE, ALMOST A MONTH. PORSHA: DURING THAT TIME, THE
SHERIFF’S OFFICE SAYS IT’S SMART
TO REACH OUT TO LEGAL AID, THE
PRO BONO HOUSING EVICTION
ASSISTANCE PROGRAM–ONE OF MANY
RESOURES TO HELP YOU PREPARE FOR COURT.>>I CAN’T SPEAK FOR THE JUDGE,
BUT A TENANT WHO HAS BEEN
AFFECTED BY COVID-19, WHO’S LOST
THEIR JOB, WHO’S HAD HEALTH
PROBLEMS, THIS IS THEIR CHANCE
TO TAKE THEIR DOCUMENTATION AND GO PRESENT THAT. PORSHA: IF YOU DON’T SHOW UP TO
YOU’RE HEARING, IT COULD MEAN
AUTOMATIC JUDGEMENT
>>ONCE THE JUDGE RULES IN FAVOR
OF THE LANDLORD, THE LANDLORD
HAS TO TAKE THAT JUDGEMENT AND FILE IT WITH THE CLERKS OFFICE. PORSHA: THAT’S WHEN DEPUTIES GET
INVOLVED.>>THE STATE HAS A
LANDLORD/TENANT ACT THAT IS
THERE TO PROTECT TENANTS, THAT
IS THERE TO PROTECT LANDLORDS. WE ARE JUST A VERY SMALL PIECE
OF THAT. PORSHA: THE DEPARTMENT SAYS
THEY’LL BE SERVING 18 EVICTIONS
THAT ARE PRE-COVID NEXT WEEK TO
TENANTS LIVING IN HOMES OWNED
OUTRIGHT BY THE LANDLORD, OR
FUNDED BY PRIVATE BACKING.>>THIS IS NOT SOMETHING THAT WE
ENJOY DOING, BUT IT IS SOMETHING
BY THE LAW THAT WE MUST DO, AND
WE WILL DO THIS RESPECTFULLY

  1. do they want crime to rise? cause this is how you get crime to rise. I see a lot of landlords getting killed if they go through with this.
The people are already angry, They've lost their jobs, Unemployment is cutting off, threats by law enforcement to abide by unconstitutional sanctions, and then some greedy landlord is gonna come in and kick them to the curb.
how do you think someone will respond when they are told they need to go shelter at home, and they've just been evicted. they're gonna snap.

    Lose job(pandemic) + lose home(evicted) + lose car(repod) + lose kids(dhs) = lose sanity.
