How to merge TX PLLs NativePHY

Hi, greeting to you. I’m Chee Pin, from Penang Global Application
Engineering team. Today I would like to show how to merge the
TX PLLs of Native PHY instances with TX PLL dynamic reconfiguration enabled in Stratix
V devices By end of this video, you will understand
how to merge the TX PLLs of two Stratix V Native PHY instances with TX PLL reconfiguration
enabled by using the TX PLL reconfiguration group assignment
Similar method is applicable to all V series devices
In this video, I will use Quartus Prime version 15.1
This is the link to the design example which I will use to facilitate the demo
Now, let’s proceed to see how to set the TX PLL reconfiguration group assignment
First, download the design example from the Altera wiki link
Extract the project QAR file and you should see instances like Native PHY, reset controller
and transceiver reconfiguration controller The two Native PHY instances have the same
configuration and with TX PLL dynamic reconfiguration enabled
By default, when the TX PLL dynamic reconfiguration is enabled, Quartus will instantiate separate
TX PLLs for the Native PHY instances even though both transceiver configurations can
share a single TX PLL Run Analysis & Synthesis compilation with
the design After the compilation is completed, open up
the RTL Viewer Look for the lowest level ATX PLL node for
the first instance of Native PHY Right click on the ATX PLL and locate the
node in Assignment Editor Go to Assignment Editor and populate the ATX
PLL node here Select XCVR TX PLL Reconfiguration Group Setting
for the Assignment Name column Set the group number as “5” for example
Repeat the steps and set the same group number as “5” for the ATX PLL of the other Native
PHY instance In this example, the reconfiguration group
setting has been pre-assigned to facilitate the demo
Save and compile the design until Fitter At the Compilation report, look for the Transmitter
PLL under the GXB Reports You can see that there is only one ATX PLL
resource used which indicate the TX PLLs for the two Native PHY instances have been successfully
merged In summary, this video shows how to merge
the TX PLLs of Native PHY instances with TX PLL dynamic reconfiguration enabled in Stratix
V devices Thank you for watching this video
